I just purchased a new Cabin XT Pro X-Over Cabin. I have not taken it on the ice yet my first impression is that it will be a nice ice house. This is my 4th Otter Pro series ice house, I have had the Lodge, Resort and a non X-Over Cabin. I still have the Resort and non X-Over Cabin. The first thing that stood out to me about these new shacks is that the aluminum poles do not use the self-tapping screws to hold them together. They now have an insert with a spring clip and just slide together and snap lock similar to the push button on the poles for collapsing them but do not stick out past the tubing. I was happy to see this because no matter how careful I have been before at least a few of those self-tapping screws always work their way back out or the tubing strips out. The inserts appear to be riveted in and should not fall out from what I can tell.
For the X-Over pole it locks over a bushing instead of being bolted on the the pivot frame and allows you to unlock it and set it on the preset bushing on the bottom pole then allowing you to use the side doors. When you decide to fold the shack down you will have to move the X-Over pole back to the pivot frame like it is on a non X-Over model.
The extra weight of the thermal insulation is worth it. You do not get the condensation build up and dripping from the roof, it doesn’t flap as bad as a non-insulated shack in the wind and it is very easy to heat if it is very cold.
Overall I think these are a step forward, especially how the aluminum poles lock together. I am leaving 5 stars for now because I have really liked my other houses so much and believe this will be just as good.
